In case your hotel doesn't provide breakfast you will meet your trekking guide at 7 am in a local Cafe near our office where you will have a nice, solid start in the day.
30-45 minutes later you start your half day hike directly from there.
After 2 minutes you will find yourself already out of town, right above Lalibela, in the nature.
On the way to the mountain monastery Asheten Maryam you will overcome hills in a zick-zack line- the paths have been there for many, many years.
The views are already overwhelming and will make you - apart from the constant going up-up-up- stop many times.
You will see fields and tiny farmer’s villages, a lot of curious kids and the odd person trying to sell you little handmade dolls and Coca Cola, tea or coffee.
It's up to you if you like to visit and enter the monastery (there is an entrance fee) you can also go around it, the view will still be perfect.
In one of the little villages we will pause with you for the famous Ethiopian Coffee ceremony, which has 3 rounds- so it will take a little bit of time.
Also if you ask for it, the lady of the house will be happy to show you the way they live, you can ask questions and your guide will explain all for you.
If you are lucky the farmer’s wife can show you how to bake injera-our beloved Ethiopian bread- this depends if she has to prepare it anyway-the fermentation need 3-4 days.
After this you will slowly make your way back to Lalibela.
Around mid- day you will be back in your hotel, with hopefully nice memories of the beautiful countryside around Lalibela and the rural Ethiopian farmers life!
You also can choose to ride on the back of a mule or horse to the monastery.
